Skype Dials Up The Channel, Formal Partner Program On The Way

Posted in : News

(added few years ago!)

Skype will make a formal entry into the value-added channel as it prepares to take the wraps off a partner program -- an effort to integrate its popular peer-to-peer VoIP software application into business environments with the help of VARs, ISVs and other potential partners.
Skype will offer lead generation, marketing support and technical support, said Chaim Haas, a Skype spokesman from the public relations firm Kaplow, confirming some details of Skype's program to Channelweb.com Friday.

He didn't disclose pricing, didn't specify the exact date of program launch and didn't confirm if Skype had yet recruited any partners, but said Skype is inviting potential solution providers to sign up for more information through its Web site. "We're still in the process of finalizing all the specific details and what we're going to be asking of channel partners and how we're going to be reimbursing them," Haas said.

The confirmation comes the same week that Skype's Chief Strategy Officer Christopher Dean discussed Skype's partner program at the VON Conference & Expo in South Beach, Fla. (A copy of his presentation can be downloaded here).

Skype Founders Sue eBay What's Going On?

Posted in : News

(added few years ago!)
The founders of Skype are suing eBay for copyright infringement, a move that could block eBay's deal to sell a majority stake in Skype to a group of private investors for $1.9 billion.

eBay purchased Skype back in 2005 for $2.6 billion, but failed to acquire Joltid, the company supplying the core technology behind Skype, also owned by the founders of the VoIP software. The sale was seen as a big failure because the company was not able to further monetize the potential of the VoIP service in the years to come.

So eBay sold a 65 percent stake in Skype two weeks ago to an investment group for $1.9 billion, managing to get back some of the money it invested initially. But it's not all good for Skype, as Skype's original founders are now suing eBay, seeking damages for copyright infringement.

Skype deal stumbles over software row

Posted in : News

(added few years ago!)

The proposed purchase of Skype by a prominent group of investors hit a stumbling block from a move on Wednesday in which a company owned by Skype’s founders sued current owner Ebay, the investor group and Skype for copyright infringement.

Joltid, a company run by Skype founders Janus Friis and Niklas Zennstrom, is seeking an injunction in the US that would stop Skype from operating and recoup damages it says are accumulating at a rate of more than $75m per day.

Joltid had already filed a suit in London against Ebay. Joltid owns the peer-to-peer technology that is used to power Skype. Mr Friis and Mr Zennstrom retained ownership of the technology when they sold Skype to Ebay in 2005 for $3.1bn. But in March they accused Ebay of violating the terms of that licensing agreement and filed a separate lawsuit in London.

Skype readies for third party apps

Posted in : News

(added few years ago!)

Changes are afoot for Skype, the internet phone service, that’s for sure. Owner eBay is spinning it off, but that’s not all that’s in store: Skype is planning a brand new platform to let third party developers build on top of Skype services. Anyone fancy making Skype video calls from within Facebook?

Currently, Skype has offered very little in the way of third-party support, with only programs like iSkoot for mobiles able to take advantage of it VOIP tech. But TechCrunch has been talking to Skype general manager of audio and video, Jonathan Christensen about the company’s plans, and they include a “next generation platform” which will “open many more opportunities for developers to build on Skype services.”

That’s all Skype can pledge at the moment, but it’s a promising start. It could eventually mean a Skype SDK, meaning any third party developers can integrate the Skype phone service into their apps, which would be great for social networking sites and clients, as well as games. We’ll keep you posted all the way on this one, as you can bet some major changes to Skype are in the pipeline.

Skype finally hits iPhones in Canada

Posted in : News

(added few years ago!)

Skype is finally releasing a downloadable application for Apple's popular iPhone in Canada, five months after doing so everywhere else.

The company, which was spun off last week by eBay to a group of investors in a $2-billion US deal, is making the app available on Tuesday. Iphone and iPod Touch owners will be able to download it to their device for free, whereupon they can use Skype's internet-based calling service.

As elsewhere, Skype's calling features will only work when the iPhone or iPod is connected to the internet through a Wi-Fi wireless network. Wireless carriers have so far prohibited the application from using the iPhone's cellular internet connection to make calls, because doing so means customers could drop their voice plans altogether.
