Playstation Vita coming next year, Skype comes to iPad (Video)

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Sony's PlayStation Via game system will go on sale in Japan by the end of this year and launch in the US and Europe in early 2012. The device boasts advanced features like motion controls and touchpads on both its screen and rear side.

It'll stick to its launch price of US$250, despite recent, drastic price cuts by Nintendo to its 3DS handheld released earlier this year. Kaz Hirai who is in charge of Sony's gaming operations and consumer electronics declined to provide any shipment targets for the Vita, saying only he wanted to make sure there were a variety of quality games available for the Vita at launch. A lack of quality titles was one issue that hurt the 3DS. During Hirai's talk with reporters at Sony's headquarters in Tokyo he also addressed Sony's struggling TV business and called it his top priority.

Like other major manufacturers, Sony has struggled to make a profit in TVs, as consumers opt for cheaper models over established brands with more features. The company recently slashed its 12-month TV sales forecast from 27 million units to 22 million units, and is aiming to sell higher-profit models rather than focus on market share. Sony was third in global flat panel TV sales during the first quarter behind Samsung and LG.

Those of you hopping onto American Airlines transcontinental flights will soon be able to rent movies and tv shows and view them on your mobile device in flight. Passengers can log onto a homepage on 767 flights between New York and LA or San Francisco and order a variety of TV shows and movies right form their laptops or mobile phones. You won't have to buy in flight internet to watch and movies cost $4 and TV shows just $1. If you don't finish it in flight you have a day to continue watching your movie and 3 days to finish your tv show. American started testing the in flight video system in May and received FAA certification this month. It plans to roll out the service to all wifi enabled aircraft starting later this year.

An update to Google Chrome offers users two noteworthy upgrades: Instant Pages and print preview. Instant pages shaves a few seconds off page loading times by prerendering the top search result. Google produced their own demo where it showed that pages load faster using Instant, but in our own unscientific test we saw a very small improvement in page load speed. Print preview offers you a black and white preview of what you'll be printing. With that you can make sure everything you want to print ends up on the page. It's all available in Chrome version 13 which is available now as a free download.

An official Skype app came to Apple's iOS store this week after quickly appearing and disappearing earlier in the week. Like Apple's own FaceTime app, Skype for the iPad utilizes the front-facing camera on the iPad 2 to enable video calls. The first-generation iPad can only receive video calls. Contrary to FaceTime, Skype on the iPad lets users call and video chat with owners of non-Apple devices. Skype for the iPad sends and receives calls over either a Wi-Fi or 3G data connection, another differentiator from FaceTime, which currently allows video chat via Wi-Fi only. The app is available now and is free. For Android users, Skype 2.1 has added video support to a number of devices, including any running Android 2.2. It's also free and available now.

Samsung announced a software update for its Galaxy Tab 10.1 with a number of business features that the company hopes will push the device to corporate users. The software update for the tablet, which runs on Google's Android 3., includes security, workgroup and device management features to make the tablet relevant in business environments. IT managers can control functions on the tablet, such as access to the Android Market and removal of hardware, while also bringing videoconferencing and real-time document sharing to the device. Samsung did make it a point to say that the Tab's main target audience is consumers and that the business features are complimentary.

Nissan has developed a system that allows an electric car to feed electricity back to power a house. A prototype of the system is already running in a test-bed house next to the company's headquarters in Yokohama. The charging unit can both feed electricity into the car and take it back, converting it to the standard household supply while doing so. The lithium ion batteries in a Leaf can store up to 24 kilowatt hours of electricity, which Nissan estimates is sufficient to power an average Japanese home for about two days. If the system is used regularly, it could also help cut energy bills. By charging the car overnight, when power demand is low and electricity is cheaper, the stored energy in the battery can be released in the daytime when electricity costs are higher. Nissan plans to commercialize the system sometime before April 2012. Models for the overseas market will likely follow but will first have to be designed for local electricity supply systems. The company did not announce pricing details.

One of the latest caretaker robots from Japan is tasked with moving patients from their beds into wheelchairs. Developed by RIKEN a Japanese government run research body, the was developed because the group found that on average nursing home workers had to move patients from a bed into a wheelchair about 40 times a day. To accomplish the task, the robot has powerful motors to lift a person weighing up to 80 kilograms from ground level, wheelchairs and beds. It has sheets of a specially designed rubber sensor mesh along its arms and chest to provide feedback while carrying patients. RIBA-II will go into nursing homes next year for testing and sales are due to begin in 2015. The current target price is around 6 million yen, that's about $78,000.

Skype for iPad launch puts video calls on the large screen

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

VoIP service Skype has finally launched its iPad-optimized tablet app in the Apple App Store. "Skype for iPad gives Skype users the best of both worlds for video calling: the large screen and display of a personal computer, but the portability of a mobile phone. We've taken advantage of the iPad’s large screen and optimized the user experience along with making it easier than ever to navigate through the new intuitive interface,” said Neil Stevens, Skype’s vice president and general manager for product and marketing.

The application enables users to make and receive free Skype-to-Skype calls over WiFi or 3G and offers video calls “that deliver up to VGA quality video (640x480) at 15 frames per second,” said Skype. The app can also be used to send instant messages or SMS text messages.

Twitter has been busy creating an iPad-optimized HTML5 tablet web app too. The company tweeted “We've launched our HTML5 version of twitter.com for iPad. It will be rolling out to device owners over the next week or so,” via its twittermobile account on August 3. Skype for iPad is available now for free in the iTunes App Store. iPad users visiting Twitter on their device will start to see the touch-enhanced version of the website soon.

Skype for iPad back in the App Store – and it’s still ther

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Yesterday Skype for iPad appeared in the App Store, only to be pulled a short time later. No one knew why. The company apologised on its Twitter feed. “We know you’ve been eagerly awaiting Skype for iPad and apologize for the inconvenience,” a tweet said.

After that, Skype’s twitter feed fell silent. What were they doing? Tweaking the iPad version’s interface? Fixing a security hole? Quite possibly they were simply writing the blog post accompanying its release. Ten hours after its last tweet came another: “Finally, Skype for iPad is now available.” And the good news? It’s still available.

Before yesterday, iPad users of Skype had to make do with the iPhone version, which had a small interface on the tablet’s larger screen, along with several other limitations. In the blog post that went up on Tuesday, Rick Osterloh, the video chat company’s head of product management, wrote that the iPad-specific version is “beautifully designed and optimized for the iPad. It offers the best of both worlds for users who want a larger Skype experience, on-the-go.”

He continued: “Not only does Skype for iPad feature an interface that takes advantage of the large screen, but there are a number of additional iPad-optimized features found in this new app.”

These include optimized two-way video calling, enabling users to connect with 170 million other Skype users around the world. Instant messaging during a video call is now possible. Viewing contacts has become simpler – they’re laid out in a grid format, displaying large avatar photos. Navigation has been improved, making it simpler to search recent conversations and history. The introduction of “simple SMS texting” means you can just tap on a contact and select “send SMS,” or open the dial pad and punch in the appropriate number before typing your message. Calls to landlines and cell phones are possible, with Skype credit, and the new app works over both Wi-Fi and 3G networks.

Skype on Xbox 360 sooner than expected?

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Xbox 360 folks, you might get yourselves a Skype in your console much sooner than you think they will. In the latest Xbox 360 awards survey Microsoft accidentally dropped the hints of a Skype integration on the console application arriving soon. “Other than playing games, which of the following activities do you enjoy on Xbox 360?” asks the survey.

The answers include watching DVDs and Zune movies but they are really playing the toes by including “using Skype” as an option in the survey. There are no words from the company about their Skype plans until the EU commission has technically approved the deal. However, Microsoft has previously approved the fact that the online calling service will paves its way to the Kinect and Xbox 360.

Realistically, we can set an October release for the Skype application to arrives into the console as it supposedly coincides with the Microsoft-Skype deal and also in time for the fall dashboard update.

The upcoming dashboard update from Microsoft will bring Bing search integration and a new Metro tile user interface to the gaming platform. Skype currently boasting some 170 million connected users and saw over 207 billion minutes of voice and video conversations in last year alone while Microsoft reportedly sold over 55 million Xbox 360 consoles and possessed 35 million active users in Xbox Live.

Skype 5.5 strengthens links with Facebook, boosts video performance

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Skype has announced the release of Skype for Windows 5.5. Its headline feature is deeper integration with Facebook. Once installed, you’ll be able to see which Facebook friends are online and chat directly from Skype itself, plus update your Skype Mood and Facebook status together. You can also view, comment and “like” Facebook status messages too.

Skype 5.5 also promises improved video call reliability, new and updated emoticons and a raft of other minor improvements, interface tweaks and bug fixes.

Video performance has been improved via a series of changes designed to reduce the load on your graphics device, which has benefits for those with older cards or chipsets. Skype has also rejigged the emoticons available during text-based chats, adding a number of new ones that include (facepalm), (highfive), (fingerscrossed) and (waiting).

Among various design changes are a stripped down call control interface, with less buttons onscreen when making a call – additional controls such as screen sharing or file sending are now hidden behind a + button.

In addition to these new features and minor changes, Skype for Windows 5.5 also features a number of numerous bug fixes, although it has been released with a number of issues. If switching network connections at any time, your Facebook connection may be lost – Skype suggests either restarting the application or changing your status to offline and then online again.

You may also be unable to make yourself invisible in Facebook when setting your Skype status to Invisible – no workaround is currently available for this problem, while Skype 5.5 may also prevent your computer from going to sleep while it’s running. The only suggestion here is to quit the application before leaving your computer.

For those who installed MP3 Skype Recorder following yesterday’s tip, the good news is that while Skype 5.5 removes the Extras Manager, MP3 Skype Recorder will continue to function even after this has been removed. It appears that MP3 Skype Recorder only requires the Extras Manager to be present when first installed.

Skype for Windows 5.5 is available now as a freeware download for PCs running Windows XP or later. Separate versions of Skype are also available for Linux, Mac, iPhone, iPad and Android.

Skype Lets Deployed Military Dad Witness Son's Birth

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

An active-duty member of the military is on the other side of the world, but that didn't stop him from watching the birth of his second child on Friday. "Thanks to technology and the good graces of MetroHealth and the nursing director on labor and delivery, we're able to put this together and words can't express how truly grateful I am," said James Jesionowski. The member of the 910th Airwing out of Youngstown is currently stationed in Afghanistan and was unable to be home for the birth of his son, Richard.

"He's 8-pounds and 10-ounces and he's 20 inches long and he has big hands and feet," said Denise Horvath, the child's mother. "I don't have words to describe how happy I am, really, it's overwhelming."

Mom was due next Tuesday, but Richard came early and everyone was ready, including his 12-year-old sister, Allysah. "I just, they're so cute, I love him! I'm so excited!"Geoff Petranek is the nurse who helped coordinate the not-so-common connection. "Every delivery is a big occasion for the family and this would definitely rank in my top 10," said Petranek.

"They just kinda took over and helped us so much, I really didn't have to worry about it anything, so it was kinda amazing," said Denise. She said she'll be fine until dad comes home, which can't come soon enough for the entire family.

"I'm a proud servant of our country and I do what I'm told," said James. "I do it honorably and I'm just proud to be able to experience this and still do my job, it's the best of both worlds."This is James' first tour of duty in Afghanistan, but it is his third deployment. James will be back home in January.

MLM Prospecting: Skype

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

For those of you are not familiar with my history regarding Internet Phone Services, let me tell you why I am so happy that companies are promoting this cost savings service. When Execl Communications (the phone mlm company giant) disappeared a few years ago, I tried very hard to broker a deal between my mlm company and a new start-up Internet Phone Service company, that offered their phone service in bundles; everything for one low monthly price.

I fully believed that this service would make for a great product for any network marketing company, complete with repeat sales. Where you pay one monthly fee and you receive all of your telephone services; complete with unlimited local and long distance. The only equipment you needed was an adapter on your phone cord (which came free with the service). At the time the company was working on a way to bring this service to cell phones. Unlike some Phone Service Providers, with this company you did not need to cancel your current phone service.

With the launch of new Diet Plan currently going on, Head Office feared that bringing on a new product like this at the same time could hurt the success of the Diet Plan. Being a Health and Nutrition Company they made the right choice at the time and passed on the opportunity. This new Internet Phone Company in time folded and the owner went on to join a MLM think tank. I like to think that I helped him discover the power of Network Marketing from the excitement and depth of our discussions.

I do not want to start by automatically assuming everyone knows what Skype is - many people don't. Some of you like myself have heard of Skype prior, but never used it. When my mlm company started to promote it I did a little researching, I found out that Skype had started offering Monthly Subscriptions. I must confess I started to feel a little excited.

Skype is, basically, is a way you can cut phone costs. It's also legal and here to stay. Founded in 2003 and based in Luxembourg. Skype is owned by an investor group led by Silver Lake and which includes eBay Inc, Joltid Limited and Skype founders Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Andreessen Horowitz. Skype had an average of 145 million connected users per month in the fourth quarter of 2010. Skype users made 207 billion minutes of voice and video calls in 2010, approximately 42% of which was video. Skype is not a replacement for your traditional telephone service and cannot be used for emergency calling. Access to an Internet connection is required and a computer/laptop (PC or Mac) or Skype-capable phone or a WiFi-capable cell phone.
What is Skype?

It's an application that allows you to make calls over the Internet. With Skype, you can call from your computer to other Skype users, or you can make calls to traditional landlines or cell phones. Using Skype is typically much cheaper than using landlines, and for international calls, the sound quality is often better.

Best of all, it's portable: You can use the same phone plan to make calls from home, the office and hotels around the world. For very little money. Skype is not new, millions of individuals and businesses use Skype to make free video and voice calls, send instant messages and share files with other Skype users. Everyday, people also use Skype to make low-cost calls to landlines and mobiles. Because Skype is so unbelievably cheap, I've run across lots of people who still consider it some kind of Dark Internet Service, that requires special equipment or technical know-how to get it up and running. This isn't so.

Skype, which routes calls through the Internet, is easy to set up and pretty hassle-free to use. Unlike other Internet Phone Services, it requires no contract or installation; you can set it up yourself. You do need to buy some equipment to use Skype, but none of it is exotic or expensive. And once you're using it, it feels no different from an ordinary phone.

Using Skype with MLM
You can pay for your Skype calls on a per-call basis or through a subscription. I believe that a monthly subscription is the way to go, the best subscriptions to build your business is Unlimited US & Canada for about $3 per month, includingAlaska, Guam, Hawaii, Puerto Rico.

Call any time of day, any day of the week without the need for a long-term contract. You can choose a subscription to call a country that's different from the one you live in. Also, you can make calls using your subscription from any other country - great for when you're travelling.

A fair usage policy does apply, your subscription is subject to a fair usage limit of 10,000 minutes per user per month, with a maximum of 6 hours per day. Also, no more than 50 different numbers in total can be called per day. Once these limits are exceeded Skype will charge normal rates and a connection fee for any additional minutes used.

Skype comes with some really useful free features like Skype-to-Skype calls, video calling and instant messaging (IM). But, when you take out a subscription or purchase a little pay as you go Skype Credit you can do so much more. And the great thing is that you'll save loads of money in the process.

Microsoft 'Stole' Skype From eBay: Elevation's McNamee

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Microsoft "stole" Skype from Silver Lake Partners and previous owner eBay [EBAY  33.36     -1.06  (-3.08%)      ] when it purchased the internet video communication service for just $8.5 billion this May from the private equity firm, according to legendary venture capitalist Roger McNamee.

Silver Lake bought Skype two years ago from eBay for $2 billion. "They bought the last global, integrated telecom company left for half the value of Sprint [S  5.16     -0.02  (-0.39%)       ]," said the founder of Elevation Partners. "There should be a war crimes trial about that deal."

Microsoft [MSFT  27.33     -0.75  (-2.67%)       ] expects the all-cash acquisition, the software giant's largest ever, to get regulatory clearance before the end of the year. Vonage to Offer Calling on All Mobile Phones, Challenging Skype

Posted in : News

(added few months ago!)

Vonage Holdings Corp. (VG), the biggest U.S. provider of telephone service over the Internet, said it will let users of its home plans make calls with a second device such as a mobile phone. The new feature, called Extensions, represents another round in Vonage’s competition with rival Skype Technologies SA, which is being bought by Microsoft Corp. (MSFT)

Extensions will be free to add to an existing subscription plan, Vonage said today. The feature could make the service more attractive to users who make international calls with their mobile phones, Chief Executive Officer Marc Lefar said in an interview. It also may reduce the number of people who leave Vonage each month, a churn rate of 2.5 percent in the latest quarter, and attract new customers.
“We think it’s going to be a real boon for prospects,” Lefar said. “Whether it’s your home phone or your mobile phone, it simply works.” Holmdel, New Jersey-based Vonage added a net 3,345 subscriber lines in the quarter ended in March, for a total of 2.4 million.

Vonage fell 11 cents to $4.03 yesterday in New York Stock Exchange composite trading. The shares have risen 80 percent this year. The company went public in 2006 at $17 a share. Extensions may help Vonage compete more aggressively with Luxembourg-based Skype, Lefar said. After seeking to service consumers’ homes for years, both companies are now pursuing users’ mobile devices. Vonage offers a variety of subscription plans, ranging in price from $12 to $65 a month.
Web-Calling Apps

Skype’s service is available on smartphones and feature phones from Verizon Wireless, and both Vonage and Skype already offer Web-calling applications for smartphones. Extensions will make Vonage’s service available on simpler, cheaper phones. The Extensions service works as a virtual calling card. To use it, consumers can go to Vonage’s website and add a second phone number to their service plan. To make a call from a mobile phone, a user dials a special U.S. number, enters a four-digit Vonage PIN and dials the destination number.

Over the next few weeks, the company will offer downloadable apps for iPhones and Android-based devices that will enable one-touch dialing from a customer’s contact list using Extensions. In the next few months, Vonage also plans to introduce mobile-only calling plans that will work with any phone, Lefar said. Skype, meanwhile, has been adding an array of features to its mobile apps. In January, Verizon announced that subscribers who use 4G smartphones will be able to make Skype video calls.Researcher TechNavio expects the North American market for mobile Web-based calls to grow an average of 57 percent a year from 2010 to 2014.
